Senior Advocate Shri KK Venugopal takes over as next Attorney General of India

The President of India Mr.Pranab Mukherjee appointed KK Venugopal as the successor of Mukul Rohatgi as Attorney General of India.
After working for 5 years under Vajpayee government and 3 years under Modi government,Mukul Rohatgi wants to get back to his private practice and so did not wish to  extend his term. He wrote a letter to the government expressing the same.
Mr. Kottayan Katankot Venugopal was born in Kerala in the year 1931. His father Shri. M. K. Nambyar was also a lawyer who argued in A.K.Gopala case and also in many important cases in both the Madras High Court and The Supreme Court of India.
K.K.Venugopal himself has an outstanding record of achievements and an excellent legal career. In 2002, he received the prestigious Padma Bhushun and in 2015 Padma Vibhushan award  from the President for his outstanding contribution to the the country. In 1977,during Janta Party government he worked as the Additional Solicitor-General for India. He was the amicus curiae in the 2G Spectrum case. He is known for handling major cases like, Mandal case, Ayodhya dispute, Gujarat election case. He represented Mayawati in a corruption case, LK.Advani in Babri Masjid demolition case, Jayalalitha in wealth case and also defended her in the petition that challenged her appointment as Chief Minister.
