SAD DEMISE OF FORMER EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTER SMT. SUSHMA SWARAJ
Heartfelt condolence to the family and nation for the loss of one of the strongest pillar of our country. INBA is deeply saddened by the demise of our patronage, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, the great politician, the significant lawyer, and extraordinary leader of the nation.
Smt. Sushma Swaraj, 67, succumbed to cardiac arrest on the night of 6th August 2019 at AIIMS, New Delhi and with her, died a fearless leader. In November 2018, Sushma Swaraj had announced that she would not contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 due to health reasons. Her sudden demise triggered a wave of shock and grief in the nation. Delhi government has declared to observe two day mourning in her memory.
She has achieved the credit of many firsts in her long political career which gave her a worldwide recognition. She was the first woman spokesperson for a national party in the country, first woman Chief Minister of Delhi, first woman Chief Minister from BJP, first woman to become the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and first full-time woman External Affairs Minister of India. Known for her oratorical skills, she was also an esteemed Supreme Court lawyer. She was compassionate, polite yet very firm in her speeches and dialogues.
Swaraj brought empathy and caring in the working of modern politics. She connected with the people on a grass root level to resolve their disputes. She proved to be an excellent minister who was always there to help Indians across the globe. Many a times, she could be seen on twitter raising the voices of people and helping them. She was known to address grievances of overseas Indians on twitter. In one of her tweet she said-
“Even if you are stuck on the Mars, Indian Embassy there will help you”.
She has always been a very close part of INBA’s family for women empowerment projects. In the message for INBA’s The Phenomenal she book, she said “Eating chocolates or popping pills won’t reduce depression. Instead, one must read Gita. This will help relieve the stress and depression in life. It will help in dealing with challenges of life”.
It shows her consideration towards the people and enthusiasm to serve them. Political leaders like her are rare to find who devote their life for serving and well being of the people who have elected them as their representatives. After her demise, an era comes to an end. She was the face of women empowerment in the country. Through her major contribution in Indian politics, she proved to be a strong and fearless leader. The void created by her demise would be difficult to fill.
