Madhya Pradesh Political Crisis

Articles, News

In the recent political crisis in Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Minister Kamal Nath has resigned from his post. This all came from the background of congress rebels who changed their minds and their political parties. Few days back, MP Jyotiraditya Scindia with 22 of his loyalists left the Indian National Congress Party. Due to this, BJP members asked governor of Madhya Pradesh for floor test in the state assembly.

Due to the major shift of members from the Congress Party, now the opposition has demanded them to prove their majority in the state assembly. “My government was able to prove majority in the house on three occasions. The BJP could not tolerate it. So, it conspired with a Maharaj (Jyotiraditya Scindia) and 22 greedy MLAs and planned to topple my government,” said by Kamal Nath. He also refused to floor test adducing the coronavirus outbreak. But a petition regarding the floor test was filed in Supreme Court. Before the matter could be heard in court, Kamal Nath handed over his resignation to the Governor Lalji Tondon. Now he will be acting as caretaker chief minister.

On March 21, 2020 Scindia and his 22 loyalists has joined the BJP at the party president J P Nadda’s residence in New Delhi. Congressmen have condemned this action as calling it a horse-trading move by BJP.

The state assembly of Madhya Pradesh needs 103 majority mark & the BJP has 104 MLAs which states the clear-cut majority in the state. The independent MLAs in the state have now also started to support the BJP.  “In the 40 years of my public life, I have always practised politics of principles and given precedence to democratic values. Whatever has happened in the past two weeks, it is a new chapter in the devaluation of democratic values”, were the words of Kamal Nath in his resignation letter which he had submitted to Lalji Tandon.

According to the statement given by Shivraj Chauhan, Congress had fallen under its own weight. But Mr. Nath had accused the NJP of murdering the democratic values in the state. He also added that “Our MLAs were whisked away to Bengaluru, who paid for it, who pressed them, everything will come out in the open soon. One needs to remember after today, there is tomorrow, and after tomorrow there is the day after. And the day after tomorrow will come. The public is witness.”

The latest scenario is that the BJP’s Shivraj Chauhan will take oath as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh after the Congress government fell.
