Ranjan Gogoi appointed as the next” Chief Justice of India”

Ranjan Gogoi is appointed as the next Chief Justice of India succeeding CJI Deepak Mishra. He was appointed on 13th Sept, 2018 as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He would start his office as a CJI from 3rd October,2018 after present CJI Deepak Mishra will retire a day before. CJI Ranjan will work for only 13 months and will retire on Nove,ber 13, 2019.
Justice Ranjan was born on November 18,1954 . He enrolled as an advocate in 1978 and practiced on constitutional, taxation and company matters in Gauhati High Court. On Feb 28,2001 he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court. He was then appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011 and then as the judge of Supreme Court on April 23,2012. Justice Mishra has recommended Justice Gogoi as his successor .
Speculation over Justice Gogoi’s appointment as the next CJI arose after the court’s four most judges,including Justice Gogoi, called a press conference in January and criticized Justice Mishra on various issues, especially the manner of allocation of cases to certain benches.
Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had recently said the government’s intention on the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India should not be questioned. He also said that executive will take a call when the incumbent names the senior –most judge of Supreme Court as his successor as per convention.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure, which has the rules for the appointment of members for the higher judiciary says” appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be one of the senior most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office.”
Justice Gogoi is known to be a soft-spoken but tough judge. He will take office on October . CJI Deepak Mishra retires a day before, since October 2 is a holiday, October 1 will be his last working day. President Ramnath Kovind signed warrants of appointment of Justice Gogoi following which a notification announcing his appointment was issued.
