Union cabinet gives green signal to Model law
Shops, malls, cinema halls and other commercial establishments will be now able to function 24/7 throughout the year as the Union cabinet on Wednesday gave green signal to model law which allows such workplaces to operate round the clock.
The law allows specifies the measures to ensure the safety of women working late. Finance minister Arun Jaitley told the media that the proposed change in work condition for women is intended to end the ” protective discrimination” that reduced the employment opportunities for women.
The provision has also been made to exempt highly skilled workers like It professionals from daily 9 hour workday and weekly 48 working hours. The Model shops and establishment( Regulation of employment and condition of services) Bills 2016,proposed by labour ministry, will not require parliament’s assent and can be adopted by states in totality or can be modifies as per their requirements.
It has been estimated by the Hiring experts this law may boost retail job generation by 50% and it will also help the employers to have women working in night shifts,giving a leg-up to gender diversity as well.
